The Senior Director of Development (“Sr. Director”) provides leadership in building philanthropic support for the Library, aligned with priorities set by the University Librarian. This role involves identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individuals, corporations, and foundations to secure over $3 million annually for the Library.
Approximately 80% of the Sr. Director’s time will be dedicated to major gifts ($100K+) and leadership gifts ($1M+) fundraising. This includes managing a portfolio of major and leadership gift prospects and donors, overseeing cultivation activities, and implementing stewardship programs to ensure long-term donor commitment to the University. The remaining 20% of the time will focus on managing development staff, planning and executing aspects of the Library’s development program, and working on special projects for the Central Development Office. The Sr. Director will be responsible for designing and implementing strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, closing, and stewardship of gifts from various sources.
This position requires specialized knowledge in fundraising for in-kind gifts for the Library’s long-term special collections, as well as advanced or working knowledge of planned giving. The Sr. Director will personally engage with top donor prospects and support the Librarian, staff, and volunteers in managing relationships with these prospects to maximize philanthropic support for the Library and UCSB.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field, Master’s Degree preferred
  • 7-9 years of proven success in major and leadership gift experience
  • 7-9 years of demonstrated skill at gift negotiation and gift solicitation to engage complex and sophisticated individual, corporate, and foundation donors at the major and leadership gift level
  • 4-6 years of prior experience supervising or managing staff is preferred

Special Conditions of Employment

  • This is an annually renewable contract position with no limit on total duration. – Ability to work some weekends and evenings. – Ability and willingness to travel as needed.
  • Required to hold a valid driver’s license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
  • Satisfactory criminal history background check

Salary Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $119,400 to $160,000 / yr.

Full Salary Range: $119,400 to $230,800 / yr.
