Understanding Dementia: A Lunchtime Education Workshop Series

Friendship Center Adult Day Services is offering a four-week lunchtime education workshop designed for caregivers, family members, and community members supporting someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. This series provides practical, accessible education to help participants better understand dementia, plan ahead, and develop effective communication strategies.

Dementia can feel overwhelming and isolating for families, especially as symptoms change over time. This workshop series was created to help caregivers feel more informed, prepared, and supported by breaking down complex topics into clear, approachable conversations. Whether participants are newly navigating a diagnosis or supporting a loved one further along their journey, the sessions are designed to meet people where they are.

Weekly topics include an introduction to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, common warning signs, myths, and when to seek help; differences between Alzheimer’s and other dementias and how they affect the brain; planning ahead for legal, financial, and family conversations; and practical communication and behavior strategies, including role-playing and skill-building.

Sessions are facilitated by Gina Bell, M.A., who holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and brings over 20 years of experience in education and community mental health. An award-winning former college instructor, Gina has extensive counseling experience and regularly leads community support groups focused on caregiving, grief, and mental wellness. Her approach emphasizes compassionate, practical guidance that caregivers can apply immediately in everyday life.

Workshops take place weekly in February from 12:00–1:00 p.m. at Friendship Center in Santa Barbara. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch and may attend one or all sessions. Space is limited, and advance registration is required.
