Therapy Dogs of America brings comfort, connection, and calm to people of all ages through the power of the human–animal bond. Our certified volunteer therapy dog teams visit schools, senior care communities, behavioral health settings, correctional facilities, airports, and other community-based sites throughout Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, creating meaningful moments that truly matter.
Position Overview
The Volunteer & Program Coordinator plays a central role in supporting our therapy dog teams and programs. This position oversees volunteer onboarding, scheduling, outreach, and ongoing support, while also managing program logistics with partner sites, materials, and impact tracking.
This role is ideal for someone who is highly organized, people-focused, tech-comfortable, and passionate about volunteer engagement, community partnerships, and mission-driven work.
Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Coordination & Engagement
- Lead onboarding for new volunteer therapy dog teams, including orientation, documentation, and training for visit protocols and how to use Sign-Up Genius
- Serve as a primary point of contact for volunteers, providing consistent communication, outreach, and support
- Manage volunteer scheduling for all therapy dog visits and programs using Sign-Up Genius
- Coordinate volunteer materials, including distribution, inventory tracking, and ordering of supplies
- Plan and coordinate at least one volunteer mixer or appreciation event annually
Program Scheduling & Site Coordination
- Schedule and coordinate all therapy dog visits with partner sites
- Communicate directly with site contacts regarding visit logistics, expectations, and scheduling needs
- Manage pre-visit requirements, protocols, and follow-up communications
- Inform the Executive Director of insurance and school district legal requirements
- Establish and support relationships with new program site partners
Program Administration & Creative Support
- Track volunteer hours and therapy dog visit impact data
- Create therapy dog business cards and basic program materials in Canva
- Add new therapy dogs and teams to the organization’s website using WordPress
- Maintain accurate program and volunteer records to support reporting and evaluation
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with organizational leadership to support program goals and operational needs
- Ensure clear, timely, and professional communication with volunteers and visit locations
Qualifications
- Experience coordinating volunteers, programs, or community partnerships (nonprofit experience a plus)
- Proficiency with Canva, WordPress, Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and Sign-Up Genius
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with excellent attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating within a small team
- Passion for community service, volunteer engagement, and animal-assisted programs
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in becoming a certified therapy dog team with their own dog and participating in therapy dog visits as part of the organization
Schedule & Compensation
- $35 per hour
- Part-time, average 25 hours per week
- Remote, flexible schedule attending at least 2 visits per month, but more when onboarding new teams or filling in for teams
