DANA ADOBE NIPOMO AMIGOS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB POSTING

OVERVIEW

The Board of Directors of the Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos (DANA) seeks a passionate, collaborative and visionary executive leader to build upon years of successful efforts.  In partnership with the board and staff, the successful candidate will build partnerships, secure funding, and advocate for innovative approaches to sustain programming, and coordinate project development.  The executive director manages staff and works with volunteers in the ongoing creation and delivery of programs, maintains the relevancy of museum exhibits, training, and programming assistance. The candidate will promote the value of DANA’s programming to funders, educators, administrators, government leaders, and the public.

ABOUT THE DANA

The DANA is a museum which interprets one of the most historic properties along the California Central Coast. The organization’s mission is to engage visitors with the stories of California’s rancho era, connecting guests with the peoples, land, and resources to foster environmental stewardship and cultural understanding.  Established in 2000, with an initial goal to save and restore the Dana Adobe (built in 1839), the organization has grown to manage two facilities and more than 130 acres today. The DANA engages more than 5,000 visitors annually.

 

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION:

FUNDRAISING (40%)

  • Support development of annual fundraising activities; implement special fundraising campaigns under the direction of the Board, and make proposals to the Board to increase revenue, identify and cultivate donors, and increase current membership
  • Research, write and administer grant applications from public and private entities
  • Plan, implement and report to the Board on fundraising efforts which may include Annual, Membership, Planned Giving and Capital Campaign efforts

PROGRAM AND RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT (25%)

  • Represent DANA to all its constituents
  • Represent DANA in its relations with business, state, and federal agencies and organizations
  • Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities for DANA
  • Always promote the Museum, Board, staff, and volunteers in a positive manner to maintain goodwill and encourage continued community participation in Museum sponsored activities
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications – from web presence to external relations – with the goal of creating a stronger brand

ORGANIZATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND DEVELOPMENT (35%)

  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals
  • Ensure effective systems to track progress, and regularly evaluate program components to effectively communicate to the board, funders, and constituents
  • Support and work to develop a strong Board of Directors
  • Work with the Board to implement, review and recommend policies as needed; attend meetings, ensure preparation of reports, maintain records and communicate about emerging internal and external issues that affect the organization
  • Work with the board to develop a strategic plan and implement the plan with the support of the staff and Board.
  • In conjunction with the Treasurer and Finance Committee, create and recommend  budgets to ensure financial stability and growth of the organization
  • Authorize operating expenditures and administer the approved budget with direction from the Board of Directors
  • Maintain the assets and property of the organization in a safe, good working order
  • Provide staff supervision, mentoring, and oversight
  • Foster a collaborative, mission-driven environment that engages, challenges, and supports team members in meeting organization and personal goals
  • Approve matters regarding employment, retention, and dismissal of personnel
  • Hire high-quality staff to effectively fulfill the mission of the organization
  • Lead and facilitate professional development, coaching, and support staff, including succession planning
  • Ensure that DANA complies with laws and regulations
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Board of Directors

QUALIFICATIONS

The Executive Director should demonstrate experience and skills in balancing the three primary work duty areas and should meet or exceed the following criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree or five years equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership experience with manager and/or director level experience, ideally working with and serving communities with the mission and goals of the DANA
  • Experience with developing and managing budgets
  • Experience and demonstrated track record of success with fundraising and grant development
  • Excellent verbal, written and digital communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences
  • Comfortable with community outreach with an intent to engage in the broader community as the face and ambassador of the organization
  • Commitment to interact effectively with people from different cultures and experiences; ability to lead and work with cross-cultural environments and occasionally regionally diverse environments
  • Ability to learn and build on varying cultural and community norms of diverse communities
  • Strong management skills, including managing a team environment and willingness, if necessary, to make difficult disciplinary and personnel decisions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different constituents
  • Clarity of values that are critical to organizational culture, along with the ability to communicate those values to the organizational community
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the organization, including evenings and weekends

COMPENSATION

Starting compensation for this salaried-exempt position is between $64,500 – $75,000 commensurate with experience.  Benefits include vacation pay, sick leave, and may include a subsidy toward dental and health insurance. Paid time off is based on tenure with the organization.
