Our Artists-in-Residence Program fosters creative growth for any and all artists ready to expand their perspectives through positive mentorship. This could be painters, sculptors, filmmakers, poets, novelists… Free from external pressures, residents spend 4 weeks pursuing interdisciplinary projects among not only other working artists and staff members but also 100+ campers in the prime of developing their voices.
We created this program to encourage artists to take risks while engaging local girls and gender-expansive youth in workshops that emphasize empathy, respecting differences, teamwork, sharing, experimentation, self-acceptance, and building confidence. Our summer setting of Ojai’s gorgeous Topatopa Mountains was specifically selected to aid all our artists—yes, we mean everyone in the Amplify community, from campers to counselors to artist residents —in their journey towards unapologetic self-discovery.
A hugely rewarding facet of the Artists-in-Residence Program is residents’ commitment to holding open studio hours for campers to observe how they work. By inviting our budding artists into their work space for a few hours each week, residents further strengthen their skills as teaching artists, and at the same time they get to expose local youth to different artistic processes—and different empowered voices.
Expectations
- Design, prepare & deliver 3 2-hour workshops/week (i.e., 6-hour minimum weekly commitment), incorporating the themes mentioned above, to approx. 10–15 campers at a time.
- Live, dine & thrive on campus (room & board 100% provided; art supplies for youth workshops are also covered, but personal supplies are residents’ responsibility).
- Host open studio hours for at least one hour 3 days/week (i.e., 3-hour minimum weekly commitment) so campers can watch you work, ask questions & seek guidance for their own projects.
- No personal guests allowed on campus since we operate a closed campus for everyone’s safety
