The artworks of Scott Ryker and Brian Raleigh are vibrant abstract shapes that provoke purpose and the satisfaction of creating without the frustration of perfectionism.

“The primary goal at our studio is that the artists learn fundamentals of design while making their own choices and exploring various techniques, but without the pressure of drawing or painting within a standardized way,” states Studio Manager, Jacob Allio. “Focusing on principles over purpose will always take the fun out of it.”

Both students at Santa Barbara Art Works, a local art gallery that emphasizes access in the arts and employment for adults with disabilities, Scott and Brian are the featured artists at, JUXTAPOSE, an artist exhibition opening Thursday, April 4, 2024, from 5:00 – 8:00PM. The event is free and open to the public and is located at 28 East Victoria Street in downtown Santa Barbara.

For this exhibit, Scott started with learning the fundamentals of drawing the human form using basic shapes as a foundation, and as he practiced, he wanted to add color pastels. Brian layers repetitive shapes and strokes of color on paper while admiring the smooth attributes that chalk pastels offer.

Santa Barbara Art Works is an inclusive and accessible studio, gallery, and retail location for aspiring artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities to learn and exhibit their work. Santa Barbara Art Works is under the family of services of non-profit organization, Momentum WORK, Inc.  https://www.momentum4work.org
