Position Summary 

MOXI is seeking a creative, playful, STEAM educational leader to join our team as the STEAM Education Manager, to play a critical role in advancing MOXI’s mission. This position will be responsible for the curriculum design and program management for school programs, program carts + makerspace, and will play a collaborative role in museum-wide program development on the Learning Experiences team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in STEAM curriculum design and implementation, and experience successfully managing and empowering a team. 

Report to: Associate Director of Education 

 

Responsibilities 

STEAM Curriculum Design + Program Management  

  • Design, manage and evaluate STEAM curriculum for MOXI’s school programs, including field trip programs and engineering exploration labs (primarily K-6).  
  • Design, manage, and evaluate MOXI’s curriculum-driven floor programs for youth and family audiences, including NGSS-aligned program carts.  
  • Manage and evaluate the curriculum and program goals of MOXI’s makerspace. 
  • Working collaboratively with the Education team, co-develop and deliver play-based STEAM programs, activities, and workshops that exemplify MOXI’s educational philosophy and inspire the next generation of creative problem solvers.  
  • Collaborate with the Learning Experiences team and the Associate Director of Education to develop and implement innovative strategies for learning and program development that push the boundaries of playful STEAM learning to achieve MOXI’s educational outcomes.  
  • Evaluate educational programs and facilitation to ensure quality and consistency.  

Team Management  

  • Manage a team of full-time and part-time STEAM educators; work closely with the Public Programs Manager + Camps and Outreach Manager to ensure staffing across all education programs.  
  • Train educator team in STEAM curriculum, inquiry-based facilitation, play-based learning, classroom management, and best practices of informal education. 
  • Manage team input and feedback for co-developed programs. 
  • Be present in the program spaces, directly observing the quality of the guest experience on a frequent basis. Identify ways to improve accessibility and inclusion. 

 

 

  • Manage the STEAM Education budget and payroll.  
  • Serve as Manager on Duty (MOD) at least 1 day per week, collaborating closely with managers to ensure emergency readiness. 
  • Work cross-departmentally to support MOXI programs and events, providing staffing support for Development, Membership, and Exhibit teams  
  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Requirements, Skills & Qualifications 

  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills; must be receptive to the ideas of others and able to work cooperatively to prioritize tasks and accommodate many different and overlapping projects and ideas. 
  • Passion for working with kids in playful science and engineering programs.  
  • Demonstrated STEAM curriculum design experience particularly for grades TK-6.  
  • Familiarity with NGSS, inquiry-based curriculum, play-based learning, design thinking, and other pedagogies of informal, open-ended science learning.  
  • Enthusiasm for working in an organization where change is frequent, the structure is evolving, and flexibility, teamwork, and good humor are absolute necessities.  
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn new systems and adapt to emerging technologies. 
  • Awareness of issues relating to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in curriculum design and the ability to build inclusive programs. 
  • Conscientious and detail-oriented; must have an appreciation of the necessity of following through with paperwork, record-keeping, and documentation. 
  • Ability to organize and prioritize varied tasks in a manner that most effectively serves the needs of the organization. 
  • Spanish fluency a plus.  

 

Supervisory Responsibilities 

Manages the “STEAM Team” of 4-7 full-time and part-time STEAM Educators, and the Maker Education Specialist. 

 

Education and Experience requirements: 

  • 2+ years of STEAM curriculum experience and/or experience teaching STEAM subject(s) in pre-K to 12th grade. 
  • 2+ years of experience of team leadership. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (science and/or education); Teaching credential strongly preferred (elementary multiple subject; or single subject science teaching credential). 

 

 

Additional Information 

  • This is a full-time position expected to work onsite Monday-Friday, supporting offsite programming as needed.  
  • This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule including occasional evenings, holidays, weekends, and some early mornings. 
  • Predictable and timely attendance is required.  
  • Position must be able to bend, squat, and lift p to 50 lbs; work with multiple technologies; stand for extended periods of time; troubleshoot and problem solve. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with a variety of people verbally and in writing.
