Brief Summary of Job Duties
The Director of Development, Regional Giving (“Director”), for Southern California (San Diego and Orange County primarily) reports to the Senior Director, Constituent and Regional Operations (“Senior Director”), with a primary emphasis is on increasing philanthropic support to UC Santa Barbara by maximizing the interest, involvement and commitment of alumni, parents and friends as well as select corporations and foundations in the assigned regions. The Director focuses on the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of individual prospects, including alumni, parents, and friends of the University. Primary solicitation focus will be based on a donor-centric approach with emphasis on major gifts ($100,000 or more) and new and renewing Chancellor’s Council (annual) level gifts ($1,000 to $99,999). With regard to major gift fund raising, the Director designs and executes planned strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, closing and stewardship of gifts from individuals. Works personally with top donor prospects and also supports the Senior Director, the Associate Vice Chancellor of Development, other campus administrators and key volunteers in top prospect relationships, in order to maximize philanthropic support of UC Santa Barbara. The Director focuses about eighty percent time on activities directly related to the fundraising gift cycle. Twenty percent time is focused on other activities related to fundraising, including events, volunteer committee management and administrative and managerial duties, such as planning and coordinating. The Director prioritizes work by focusing the majority of fundraising activities by geographic region. In close collaboration with the Senior Director, San Diego and Orange County are the targeted geographic regions where a regional network is developed and sustained. This targeted approach allows the Director to coordinate activities in the most efficient and strategic manner. Regional assignments may be altered or redefined at the discretion of the Senior Director.
- Demonstrated track record of managing a portfolio of high net worth individuals, soliciting and securing major gifts.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and donor/customer relationship databases in order to search for new possible donors to the University.
- Bachelor’s Degree Required
- 4-6 years of experience in individual major donor development or related profession required. Proven success in the major gift fundraising; experience in higher education preferred.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties
- 80% Active Fundraising – Manages a portfolio of 90-120 prospects drawn from the pool of prospective major and annual gift donors. One half of active prospects should be within 12 months of closure. Two thirds may be under cultivation for future gifts. Cultivates, solicits and stewards a portfolio of major gift prospects. Works closely with relevant Development Office colleagues, campus administrators, or faculty to facilitate moves toward solicitation. In collaboration with the Senior Director and other members of the senior development office team, develops major gift strategies to cultivate and solicit newly identified major gift prospects. Manages cultivation and solicitation of a portfolio of major gift prospects in the San Diego and Orange County regions Makes approximately 120 meaningful “moves” per year (an average of 12 per month for ten months with the two months reserved for planning and review), focused on the prospects under the Director’s management. (“Moves” may be defined as significant contacts or steps, executed in accordance with a strategy designed to result in a gift to UC Santa Barbara.) Moves can include personal visits, or some tailored telephone conversations, virtual visits, correspondence and other personal contact. The suggested distribution of moves is: 20 moves per month with approximately 10-12 being face-to-face contacts (including virtual visits). The Director is strongly encouraged to use personal visits as the primary method of completing a move. Travel as necessary. Makes specific efforts to cultivate and solicit current Chancellor’s Council (“CC”) members to renew their memberships, focusing at the Leadership Annual Giving level ($10,000+ annually), and supervises contacts with volunteers. Solicits new donors at $1,000 or above (CC level). Drafts necessary correspondence and provides necessary follow up generated by personal visits. Completes follow up phone calls to potential donors who have already been visited to encourage a stronger relationship with the institution with a goal of making a meaningful gift. Attends campus and regional events and other donor cultivation events as they occur.
- 20% Program Administration – Works with various UCSB Foundation Trustees and Regional Leadership Committee Members on volunteer activities. Visits and staffs Trustees, along with other key regional volunteers to implement regional activities that promote giving to UCSB. Monitors progress against goals for annual solicitations and develops and implements strategies and plans for meeting annual unrestricted giving goals. Submits contact reports of moves/solicitations. Reviews and monitors travel and entertainment expenses. Works with the Senior Director to develop regional program plans for San Diego and Orange County to develop and sustain a regional network, and meet department goals and timetables for new annual giving and major donors, as well as donor upgrading and retention.
