Job Title: Communications & Outreach Coordinator 

 Position: Full-time, non-exempt 

 Location: Ventura, California 

 Salary: $21.50 per hour 

Organization Overview 

Climate First: Replacing Oil & Gas (CFROG) is a non-profit, non-partisan, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to combating the climate crisis by working to shape the transition from fossil fuels to a carbon-free economy in Ventura County. We are committed to the transition to an economy that is sustainable, inclusive, and promotes renewable energy. We work at the local level to build awareness of how fossil fuels impact our communities and engage area officials, government agencies, and other like-minded organizations to eliminate those impacts wherever possible. CFROG also operates as a watchdog organization dedicated to ensuring that oil and gas operations in Ventura County are properly reviewed, permitted, monitored, and compliant with relevant environmental and safety laws and regulations. 

Position Overview 

The role of the Communications & Outreach Coordinator is to increase community participation in important local environmental issues, changing who gets heard in the decision-making process of local government. In this position, the Communications & Outreach Coordinator will serve as a principal point of contact to CFROG’s partners, participate in environmental collaboratives, assist with programs, develop messaging and communications materials for CFROG, conduct community outreach, and give presentations on advocacy issues. 

The position is hourly and full-time, with a flexible schedule of 40 hours per week. Regular  workweek hours are to be established in conjunction with the Executive Director. Additional  hours may be required, including on nights and weekends as needed for events and meetings, up to but not to exceed 40 hours per week. Work hours are in the office, with the flexibility for some remote work to be agreed upon with the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities 

Outreach and Communications 

  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with schools, organizations, and community groups. 
  • Find and attend outreach events to help new people get involved with CFROG as a volunteer or participant in our programs and advocacy initiatives. 
  • Coordinate updates and content management of the organization’s website, online calendar, and social media pages. 
  • Coordinate the development and distribution of a monthly newsletter.
  • Supplement and support staff needs as appropriate in all of CFROG’s programs and initiatives. 
  • Recruit and maintain volunteers to assist with CFROG programs and operations.

Advocacy 

  • Participate in local and statewide environmental advocacy collaboratives that further CFROG’s advocacy goals. 
  • Participate in public comment opportunities as appropriate.
  • Develop outreach, education, and marketing materials on CFROG’s activities and advocacy issues. 
  • Organize outreach events to inform the public of specific advocacy campaigns. 
  • Serve as a liaison between CFROG and key partners and community groups on specific advocacy issues. 
  • Assist with CFROG’s action alerts and help encourage public participation when important government policy or regulation is being considered. 
  • Solicit feedback from residents around community environmental concerns to make sure CFROG has an “ear to the ground” in the community. 

Administration 

  • Event coordination including awareness and educational events, and some fundraising.
  • Support Board of Directors and Board of Advisors involvement in CFROG advocacy initiatives.
  • Donor database management, donor thank-yous.
  • Provide detailed summaries of community meetings, events, and presentations. 
  • Provide Spanish translation services as needed. 
  • Perform administrative duties as needed. 

Qualifications 

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) required 
  • Either a bachelor’s degree OR GED/high school diploma with at least one year of experience in community outreach
  • Deep knowledge of Oxnard, California including neighboring communities 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to provide Spanish/English interpretation and translation services 
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to work as a team player and manage tasks independently
  • Demonstrated competence with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram 
  • Technological savvy with learning online platforms such as Salesforce
  • Reliable transportation, with a valid driver’s license and current insurance 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with graphic design (Canva, Adobe Spark, or similar)
  • Experience with customer relations management systems such as Salesforce
