even greater joy… There is something about The Wood Brothers’ music that serves to

lighten the mood and elevate the spirits.”

“Rustic folk sound, but with a jolt of sonic and stylistic playfulness” Aspen Times

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents The Wood Brothers with special guest Kat Wright on Tuesday, October 12 at 8 p.m. at the Granada Theatre. The performance will launch UCSB Arts & Lectures’ 2021-2022 Soul of America series. Dubbed “masters of soulful folk” (Paste), The Wood Brothers are celebrated for their freewheeling musical experimentation, fluid musical sound and the unparalleled energy of their live performances. The band was formed after brothers Chris and Oliver Wood pursued separate musical careers – Chris already had legions of devoted fans for his incomparable work as one-third of Medeski Martin & Wood, while Oliver toured with Tinsley Ellis before releasing a half-dozen albums with his band King Johnson. With drummer Jano Rix added as a permanent third member, it’s become quite clear that The Wood Brothers is indeed the main act.

Blue Note released The Wood Brothers’ debut Ways Not To Lose in 2006 and Loaded in 2008. The band moved to Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Artists for Smoke Ring Halo with The Muse to follow in 2013. After relocating to Nashville, The Wood Brothers released Paradise in 2015 recorded at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye studio. In 2016, the band returned to Levon Helm’s famed Woodstock Barn and recorded the album Live At The Barn which captured their sold-out performance that night and showcased the kind of singularly eclectic and electrifying performance style that’s earned them devoted legions of fans around the world.

On February 2nd, 2018, The Wood Brothers released their 6th album, One Drop of Truth. “It’s the freest album we’ve done, the most independent album we’ve done, and was the most fun we’ve ever had making a record,” says Oliver Wood. The end result is undeniably The Wood Brothers’ most dynamic recording to date and the band received a Grammy nod for their chart-topping album. Their latest, Kingdom in My Mind (Jan. 24, 2020), is an act of musical showmanship, exploring musical genres and utilizing an array of instrumentation.

“‘Little Bit Sweet’ is quintessential Americana” writes PopMatters. “‘Jitterbug Love’ is evocative of back-porch folk while ‘Cry Over Nothing’ is seeped in Southern gospel music. Over the years, and through their celebrated live performances, the Wood Brothers have demonstrated their penchant for a fluid musical sound. Unequivocally, Kingdom in My Mind finds strength in its freewheeling musical experimentation.”

Special Guest Kat Wright has a voice that is both sultry and dynamic, delicate yet powerful; gritty but highly emotive and nuanced. She has been described as “a young Bonnie Raitt meets Amy Winehouse.” Learn more at https://www.katwright.com/.
