The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM), which is located in the Waterfront Center Building (formerly the Naval Reserve Building), opened its doors to the public in July 2000, with the unique mission to interpret the rich and diverse maritime history of the Santa Barbara Channel. SBMM is an interactive museum – a place where the public can experience maritime culture without leaving the harbor.

From the engaging exhibitions, visitors leave with a love for and better understanding of the Santa Barbara Channel – its abundant marine life, the multiple recreational activities it provides, and the people making a living on its waters.

The marketing and communications coordinator will provide brand management support and assist with the implementation of marketing, communications, public relations, advertising, and event related efforts for the organization. This role assists with the coordination, creation, implementation, and management of marketing strategies, campaigns, internal and external messaging, website, and social media.

The marketing and communications coordinator is an enthusiastic team member reporting to the SBMM deputy director.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with coordination of all marketing, communications, and public relations needs.
  • Provide support with social media management including developing and posting content on social media platforms, responding to comments, answering messages, and engaging with partner/donor social media content.
  • Track metrics for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube).
  • Coordinate the implementation of marketing plans, campaigns, and strategies.
  • Support the management and creation of all collateral materials.
  • Develop a thorough familiarity with the museum’s history, exhibits, and programs.
  • Works with staff to maintain the SBMM website, making changes and updates as needed.
  • Works with staff to coordinate and manage all museum email campaigns, including updates and the monthly e-newsletter.
  • Assist with the development of content for digital platforms, email campaigns, and newsletters.
  • Draft and distribute press releases, fact sheets, and media invites, along with any other communication to the press and the general public.
  • Develop and cultivate strong ties with the media to help generate visibility opportunities.
  • Actively pitch stories to contacts at key media outlets.
  • Coordinate and distribute event listings to media calendars.
  • Manage and organize SBMM’s image collection.
  • Assist with events as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Good communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and time management skills.
  • Capable of working well as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Prior experience working in media relations, marketing, or communications preferred.
