The Environmental Defense Center team was some of the first people at the scene of the Plains Oil Spill 10 years ago at Refugio State Beach. Devastated, we watched wave after wave of thick oil crash onto the beach, a nauseating stench filling the air. It was one of the worst oil disasters in California history. Now, as crazy as it sounds, a Texas company, Sable, wants to restart the same failed pipeline. This is the biggest threat to our coast and so far, it has advanced without environmental review or public input as required by law. It’s not too late to stop this project, but we need Governor Newsom to speak up and do the right thing: publicly oppose this project and ensure state agencies will conduct environmental review and public hearings as required by the law.
