Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Director is responsible for overseeing and advancing the food rescue programs of Veggie Rescue. This role includes program development, community outreach, data management, and operational oversight to ensure efficient food recovery and distribution. The Program Director will work closely with the executive director, operations/transportation staff, volunteers, partner organizations, and the community to combat food insecurity and reduce food waste.
This role will involve visiting food donors and nonprofit organizations throughout Santa Barbara County. The program director will build relationships and gather information from our partners on how we can better serve them and the community at large.
Program Management & Development:
- Oversee and coordinate food rescue operations, ensuring timely and effective food distribution through direct communication and through management of the Operations Coordinator.
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance program reach and efficiency.
- Establish and maintain partnerships with food donors, nonprofit organizations, and community stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities for program expansion and innovation.
- Ensure compliance with food safety regulations and nonprofit best practices.
- Oversee fleet management and work with operations coordinator to keep all vehicles registered, insurance, and in good repair.
Outreach & Community Engagement:
- Build and maintain relationships with food donors, recipient organizations, and volunteers.
- Represent the organization at community events, networking opportunities, and speaking engagements.
- Develop and implement outreach initiatives to engage new partners and increase public awareness of food rescue efforts.
Data Management & Reporting:
- Oversee data collection, tracking, and reporting related to food rescue activities and impact using a variety of database software.
- Keep proprietary app up to date and utilize data analytics to optimize operations and resource allocation.
- Prepare reports and presentations for funders, stakeholders, and the Board of Directors.
- Ensure accurate documentation and compliance with grant funding requirements.
Volunteer & Staff Coordination:
- Supervise program staff and volunteers.
- Provide training and support to volunteers engaged in food rescue activities.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and mission-driven service.
Communications:
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
- Collaborate with executive director to share program successes and impact stories.
- Proficiency in using MailChimp or similar platforms, including building, sorting, and deploying mailing lists within the software.
- Graphic design and web maintenance (Squarespace) skills a plus.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, social work, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in program management, preferably in food rescue, food security, or nonprofit work involving multiple partner organizations.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills.
- Experience in community outreach, partnership building, and volunteer engagement.
- Proficiency in data management and reporting tools. Excel proficiency is required. Experience in Jotform, Bloomerang or similar platforms a plus.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Competitive salary based on experience, $70,000-$80,000 yearly DOE, with a 35-hour workweek

- Hybrid remote position. Minimum of one day in Santa Ynez office required each week.
