MOVE Santa Barbara County is a dynamic, community-focused non-profit working throughout Santa Barbara County. Our mission is to promote walking, bicycling and public transit county-wide to create healthy, sustainable, and equitable communities. Through events, educational outreach, and our three community bike shops—Bici Centro in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara—we work to encourage individuals and families to embrace active transportation methods as part of their everyday lives.
Job Summary
We’re looking for two passionate and motivated Education & Encouragement Coordinators to play a key role in shifting the culture away from car dependency toward healthier, more active lifestyles. In this role, you’ll partner with local schools to increase the number of students walking and biking to school. You’ll build relationships with school staff, students, and parents, design and implement campaigns, and lead educational classes on pedestrian and bike safety. You will also advocate for infrastructure changes that make it safer and easier for students to use active transportation. These positions will work with schools in the Santa Barbara area, serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Successful candidates will possess strong skills in the following areas:
- Proactive and Enterprising. Ability to listen, creatively problem solve, and get things done with a focus on increasing the number of youth walking and bicycling to school.
- Communication: Ability to engage and build relationships with parents, teachers, administrators and government partners; excellent verbal, written, listening and presentation skills.
- Leadership: Experience leading active transportation efforts at schools; comfortable speaking with diverse stakeholders, able to inspire, teach, and build a team.
Location/Hours
These are full-time positions based out of our office in Santa Barbara, CA. The roles require short-distance travel and some evening and weekend availability for special events and classes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Partnership development and coordination
- Cultivate relationships with school personnel, students, and parents to build a network of support for walking and biking initiatives.
- Collaborate with school staff to understand local challenges and foster a culture of active transportation.
- Attend school events and activities to build visibility for the program and engage key stakeholders.
- Identify and address barriers to walking and biking, working to remove obstacles to active transportation.
- Organize and promote activities to increase the number of students walking and biking to school.
- Foster relationships with government and community partners to further program goals.
2. Education and encouragement
- Develop and implement education and encouragement campaigns to boost student participation in walking and biking programs.
- Conduct assessments of pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure along school routes and lead advocacy efforts for improvements.
- Teach safety lessons for walking and biking in classroom settings.
- Set up and facilitate bike safety courses, pedestrian safety workshops, and related community events.
3. Administration and reporting
- Adhere to program budget and ensure timely completion of program deliverables.
- Maintain accurate records of program participation and provide regular reports.
- Track program outcomes and evaluate success in meeting program goals.
Required Skills
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage students, parents, teachers, and partners.
- Proactive problem solver with the ability to develop and implement creative solutions to encourage active transportation.
- Leadership experience, especially in school settings or community outreach, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, with a talent for teaching and public speaking.
Preferred Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or three years related experience.
- Proficiency in both English and Spanish.
- Experience with bicycles and basic bike maintenance.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license, with the ability to drive a pickup truck with trailer.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and Google Workspace, E-Mail, and basic spreadsheet and database management.
- Willingness to take on additional work functions as needed.
Compensation
Hourly pay rate: $23-27. We offer paid time off for sick leave and vacation, a 401k retirement plan, and contributions towards a Health Savings Account for eligible employees.
