Title: DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
The Santa Barbara Choral Society (SBCS) is a semi-professional community chorus established in 1948 by singers who desired to provide outstanding choral works to Santa Barbara. The average chorus size is 80 singers each year. Our mission is to celebrate the joy of live choral music by performing exceptional classical masterpieces and diverse, modern works for the widest possible audience. The annual income and expenses of the chorus have averaged $342K per year over the 2017-2021 period. Our current budget for the 2021-2022 season is $306K.
Overview:
The Director of Development will report to the Chair of the Fundraising and Development Committee. The Director of Development is responsible for two major functions: annual campaign solicitation and execution, and donor stewardship and recognition. S/he/they will help create and design a fundraising strategy and plan. S/he/they will carry out innovative, budget-conscious strategies for fundraising. In addition to working with SBCS’ current donors, s/he/they will strive to identify new funding organizations and new individual donors for SBCS.
Description:
In concert with the Chair of the Fundraising and Development Committee, the Director of Development
- Co-creates and implements an annual fundraising development strategy and plan
- Helps to establish short-term and long-range goals for securing unrestricted funding sources
- Strategizes and orchestrates methods of approach to cultivate institutional and private donors
- Researches current and prospective new donors and develops and grows major gifts
- Utilizes prior knowledge of fundraising development methods to reach income goals
- Creates campaign themes and implements multiple individual donor giving appeals throughout the year
- Executes timely donor-centric recognition and stewardship for donors
- Coordinates mailings, tracks internal deadlines and connects with volunteers for successful campaign completion
- Develops strategies and opportunities for occasional small donor events with focus on donor acquisition and cultivation
- Attends community events, responds to requests for presentations to build awareness about SBCS, and represents the organization to community groups with potential donors
- Executes web-based fundraising efforts that enhance donor and prospective donors’ knowledge and involvement in SBCS activities and programs
- Manages annual and holiday giving campaigns
- Produces major donor and special category solicitations support materials with the intent to retain or upgrade gifts when possible
- Cultivates donors by producing specialized correspondences, preparing letters of acknowledgment as well as scheduling and attending in-person visits
- Provides the Board with an annual report of year-to-date accomplishments and goals for the upcoming fiscal year for budget planning purposes
- Attends all SBCS concerts and receptions with the intent of providing major donors with the best possible experience
- Helps the Board of Directors fine tune a case statement of why to support SBCS
- Obtains all needed information and details from the Chair of the Fundraising and Development Committee to fulfill the fundraising development requirements
- Obtains final proposal approvals from the Chair of the Fundraising and Development Committee
- Manages the organization’s Planned Giving Program and tracks the progress of pending legacy and bequest gifts
- Tracks and maintains donor information in CRM to ensure data accuracy
- Maintains and publishes a fundraising development calendar showing all deadlines, preparation timelines, and anticipated donation receipt dates
- Maintains quality results by following fundraising development standards including consistency and tone
Skills:
- Knowledge of fundraising development processes for nonprofit organizations
- Ability to match the mission, values, and community outreach of the SBCS with prospective donors
- Ability to work as a team member as well as self-motivated staff member
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to appropriately prioritize assignments in a dynamic environment and meet deadlines
- Outstanding communications skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver information in a concise manner, verbally and in writing
- Strong and effective research, analytical and project management skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe Acrobat
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business, or related field, or equivalent experience in fundraising is valued
- Minimum 2-year experience in non-profit fundraising or a minimum of 2-year comparable and transferable skills acquired in a professional setting
- Connection to the Santa Barbara Arts Community preferred

Pay Rate: $50,000 per year (50 weeks) for approximately 20 hours per week
