Director of Annual Giving (Exempt, Full-time)

Position Summary

The Director of Annual Giving plays a critical role in advancing MOXI’s mission as a key member of the development team.  Working closely with the CAO, this position will manage a broad fundraising program to secure annual gifts from foundations, corporations, and individuals to achieve annual funding goals to support MOXI’s programs and operations. Key responsibilities of this front-facing role include managing annual appeals, overseeing annual fundraising events, hosting stewardship opportunities, meeting with current and prospective donors, and overseeing grant proposals. MOXI is also in the quiet phase of a Capital Campaign supported by a Capital Campaign Officer, CAO, CEO and campaign volunteers.  As such the role requires close collaboration to strategize stewardship and outreach that supports both annual giving and capital gifts. The ideal candidate provides excellent customer service in all transactions and interactions, has the ability to maintain confidentiality, attention to detail, strong writing skills, critical thinking, sound judgement, and above all, humor.

Reports to: Chief Advancement Officer (CAO)

Salary: $95,000-110,000

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of annual donors to engage, steward, and ultimately lead to their philanthropic support of MOXI’s mission.
  • Lead donor/foundation/corporate stewardship, partnerships, and create opportunities for engagement, volunteerism, and support to move individual donors through the pipeline through regular interactions and expressions of gratitude.
  • Conduct prospect research and qualification, including prospect identification, producing donor profiles, and developing cultivating strategies.
  • Represent MOXI in the community to expand and deepen a network of strong relationships with existing and potential community partners, funders, and supporters.
  • Manage Spring and Fall appeal planning, strategy, communication, and execution, including writing polished and compelling copy for large-scale mailings and emails.
  • Serve as thought leader for fundraiser/friendraiser events throughout the year, and supervise the project management for such events (e.g. event logistics, soliciting in-kind support, writing copy, drafting underwriting and sponsorship proposals, procuring RSVPs and guest names, following up with donors on silent auction donations, attending/working events as a front-facing MOXI representative, etc.)
  • Manage the grant submission process: ensure grant requests are submitted and reporting requirements are met.
  • Align membership program with fundraising efforts to create a pipeline for donors, identify donor prospects, and elevate members to donors. Ensure proper representation of donor identity, commitments, recognition, and benefits fulfillment.
  • Create fundraising packets and presentation materials so they are ready for use and are customized for each donor.
  • Be an inclusive leader who values and acts to advance diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion as they work with community members, internal staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Support a culture of cross-organization communication, collaboration, and information sharing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 Supervisory Responsibilities:

Stewardship Manager, Membership Manager, Grant Writer (part-time independent contractor)

 

Requirements, Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the concepts, tools and requirements of major gifts and annual campaigns.
  • Diplomacy and discretion required as well as a respect for and understanding of complex donor and Board relationships.
  • Conscientious and detail-oriented; must have an appreciation of the necessity of following through with paperwork, record-keeping, documentation, and donor confidentiality.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize varied tasks in a manner that most effectively serves the needs of the organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; must be receptive to the ideas of others and able to work cooperatively to prioritize tasks and accommodate many different and conflicting concerns.
  • Passion for creating a world-class museum that is recognized as a truly outstanding educational experience.
  • Enthusiasm for working in an organization where change is frequent, the structure is evolving, and flexibility, teamwork, and good humor are absolute necessities.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn new systems and adapt to emerging technologies.
  • Awareness of issues relating to access and inclusion and the ability to build inclusive and accessible programs.
  • Spanish fluency a plus.

 

Education and Experience requirements:

  • 5+ years’ fundraising experience in a museum or similar setting.
  • At least 2 years in a management position.
  • Experience with grant writing or reporting.
  • Experience with donor management systems/database or customer relations management system.
  • Experience managing special events.
  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline.

 

Additional Information

  • This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule of both weekdays and weekends, holidays, evenings, and some early mornings.
  • Predictable and timely attendance is required.
  • Position must be able to bend, squat, and lift up to 50 lbs.; work with multiple technologies; stand for extended periods of time; troubleshoot and problem solves; and communicate effectively and courteously with a variety of people verbally and in writing.
