The Santa Barbara City Parks Division seeks a part-time Volunteer Coordinator and Gardener to oversee weekly volunteers at Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden. We are looking for candidates with at least 3 years of experience in ornamental gardening and general horticultural knowledge. Candidates must have the ability to supervise groups of volunteers, educate and train volunteers, and interact with a wide variety of people including community members, tourists, and City staff. The ability to communicate clearly and appropriately, practice flexibility, and maintain a positive attitude is essential for this role. Fluency is Spanish is a plus, though not required.
Hourly position, 10-15 hours/week. 2-3 consistent weekday mornings/week. Valid CA Driver’s License required. This position requires frequent lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 20 pounds, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling to work close to the ground; handling and reaching; and using tools and equipment.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
- Meet and orient new volunteers
- Train and educate volunteers on horticultural practices
- Record volunteer hours
- Report any issues in the park to City staff
- Act as liaison between volunteers and City staff, report regularly to City staff
- Perform wide variety of gardening tasks using hand tools, including dead heading, weeding and thinning, light pruning, raking and sweeping, and litter and debris pick up
SALARY:
$18.63 Hourly
