“>Professor John Bowers, Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency at UCSB and also founder of the local non-profit, Unite to Light has just completed one of the most grueling mountain bike rides (2753 miles) along the Continental Divide in under 30 days.
Dr. Bowers, set out on June 13th to Ride the Divide.
This “RIDE THE DIVIDE” is described as “decidedly not for sprinters, this battle braves mountain passes, windswept valleys of the Continental Divide. The rider will climb nearly 200,000 feet of vertical (equivalent to climbing the Mount Everest summit from sea-level 7 times).” It is a “self-supported event”; no sag wagon or cushy hotels await the riders. They carry 75 pounds including food and water on their bikes and often have to ride after dark. And there is NO PRIZE for completing.
Honoring John’s accomplishments, Unite to Light supporters are raising funds to send 2753 solar lights to children around the world without access to electricity.
Unite to Light is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit that John founded in 2010. Since that time over 78,000 solar lights have been distributed to children in 65 countries.
Test scores have improved as students have a reading lamp for studying after dark.
