Santa Barbara County’s 2-1-1 receives thousands of calls a year from people in need. NPRN and Santa Barbara County’s 2-1-1 are encouraging all local health and human service providers to participate in 2-1-1. A recent call from “Jessica” illustrates how 2-1-1 connects those in need to available resources:
Jessica, a single mother of two young children, called 2-1-1 when she didn’t know where to turn. Recently divorced and without a job, Jessica moved into her mother’s house with her two children. After realizing that she and her children were living in a hostile environment, Jessica prepared to leave her mother’s cramped, one bedroom apartment.
Jessica remembered seeing a commercial for 2-1-1 offering help connecting residents to local services. The 2-1-1 call specialist was able to bring Jessica to the top of the waiting list for a Santa Barbara County shelter for women and children. Jessica said, “I am so happy to know that my children are safe each night and I have 2-1-1 to thank for that!”
The 2-1-1 database currently contains over 2400 Santa Barbara County resources but we want to ensure all health and human services programs are included. For more information about how to join the 2-1-1 Helpline go to: http://www.211sbco.org
