What should I wear and bring with me?

This year’s program will be a full day outdoors at The Alisal Ranch. While we hope for the standard beautiful weather for this time of year, please plan ahead to be outside. This private venue has dirt roads and paths which are subject to impacts of weather. Participants will move across uneven and unpredictable terrain throughout the day. The program will involve periods of standing, sitting in folding chairs/picnic benches, hayrides in open trailers, and walking/hiking around the ranch. Participants may be exposed to sun, wind, cold/warm and changing temperatures, limited shade, insect life, uneven surfaces and other natural elements. Beyond a creative mindset, PFE strongly recommends the following:

  • Dress in warm layers that can be easily taken off and put back on throughout the day
  • Wear sturdy, close toed, flat shoes
  • Bring: a hat and/ or sunglasses for sun protection, a small, closeable bag/backpack for your belongings; and a reusable mug for hot/cold beverages throughout the day (or opt- in for PFE mug at registration)

Sunscreen and insect repellent will be provided. If you have questions about the nature of this program or to make an ADA request, please email pfe@nprnsb.org  by April 3, 2020. We are happy to speak with you and all reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate participants.

Is there live Spanish interpretation?

Due to logistical complexities at the outdoor venue, language interpretation services cannot be provided at this year’s event.

Since it's an outdoor program, what happens in the case of severe weather?

As with any outdoor venue, weather is not entirely predictable. Barring severe weather at The Alisal Ranch, the program will proceed rain or shine. In the event of a declared weather emergency, PFE will be rescheduled on May 7, 2020 with the same schedule and transportation.

In this unusual case, your registration(s) will automatically transfer to the alternate weather date. Please understand, no refunds are available for weather conditions nor the alternate weather date. We encourage you to save both dates: April 22 and May 7 as you plan for PFE.

Ignite Talks and Community Conversations

What’s the difference between Ignite Talks and Community Conversations?

Inspired by the Ignite Talks movement, PFE Ignite Talks are 4-5 minute live presentations focused on one topic, with no visuals. These short powerful talks from our peers will spark ideas and share creative stories to activate deeper conversations and storytelling throughout the day. There will be two Ignite Talk sessions during the day building vision for Santa Barbara County. PFE registrants are invited to submit to be part of this program. See PFE Ignite Talks here.

PFE Community Conversations are small group, topical discussions in the Sycamore Grove following PFE Ignite Talks and hosted/co-hosted by registrants. These one-hour informal dialogues, outdoors in nature, will invite deeper exploration of Ignite Talk topics and open other focused ideas for listening to and learning from one another. There will be two different Community Conversation sessions. Conversations ideally will convene no more than 15 individuals and may contain as few as two. PFE registrants are invited to submit to host/ or co-host with a partner. See PFE Community Conversations here.

Who can give an Ignite Talk or host/co-host a Community Conversation?

Any PFE registrant can present or host — board members, foundation or staff members, program managers, outreach coordinators, lead volunteers, founders and executive leaders are all invited to submit! Colleagues and funder-grantee partners are encouraged to Propose-in-pairs to co-host a Community Conversation.

If I prefer not to host alone, how do I Propose-in-Pairs to co-host a Community Conversation?

You may partner with another funder, staff member, board member, foundation officer, or colleague from another organization to co-host a Community Conversation. Funder and grantee partners are encouraged to submit as a pair. Visit the Community Conversation page to learn more.

Can Ignite speakers or Community Conversation hosts leave after their roles are complete?

No, due to private transportation restrictions at The Alisal Ranch, early nor individual departures are not available at this venue. Upon arrival at 8 am, all attendees will be transported from parking areas/lodge to the inland Sycamore Grove program site. Private cars are not permitted on this drive. Attendees will be transported back to the parking lots/lodge at 5pm. In the case of personal emergency, Alisal’s lodge — is a 10-15 minute escorted drive from our program location.
