FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is transportation provided?

Yes. PFE will host free Jump on the School Bus, SMOOTH Transportation, and carpool rides from downtown Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and Lompoc (respectively) to and from Alisal Ranch. We strongly recommend taking advantage of this free transportation option — program activities are included during the bus ride and you’ll have priority on our naturalist-narrated hayrides! If you must drive, you can find directions here and will be responsible for arriving on time (8:00am). Whichever transportation you choose, all registrants commit to stay the full day onsite due to venue logistics.

Riding with us via  Jump on the School Bus and SMOOTH communal transportation? Santa Barbara and Santa Maria riders must be at their preferred meeting location by 6:55am at the latest! The bus pick-up locations are 7am. If you are a bus rider, please arrive to your location no later than 6:55am.

Due to the nature of the conference, you must arrive on-time. If you are late, you will not be able to receive the transportation from Alisal Ranch into the ranch for the day’s program. Thank you for understanding.

The program will be shuttling registrants back to the parking lot and communal buses from 5:30-6:30pm. The latest you will be back in the parking lot is 6:30pm. If you are taking communal bus home, you will arrive around 7:30pm.

What are my options for participating this year?

You can participate in this year’s PFE as an attendee, attendee/Ignite Presenter, attendee/Ignite Conversation host, or volunteer.

What's changing this year and why?

In an intentional departure from the conventional hotel setting, PFE 2019 is being hosted at Alisal Ranch. This full-day outdoor program will unplug you from the day-to-day routine and endless emails and reconnect you to the outdoors and your nonprofit and foundation peers in a natural setting. PFE welcomes you to explore — both the outdoors and the best ideas of our Santa Barbara County nonprofit community.

Furthermore, the PFE planning team ventured to experiment with the program in a new format this year with Ignite Presentations and Ignite Conversations. Such design additions highlight consistent feedback that funder and colleague connections are the most valued cornerstone of PFE’s history. The PFE Production Team will evaluate participant feedback after this year’s event and continue to pursue the needs and wishes in our diverse community.

Why did we leave the hotel venue?

After pausing PFE in 2018 and reviewing surveys and feedback, the PFE planning team decided to try a completely new venue and design for 2019. The PFE Production Team will evaluate participant feedback after the 2019 event and continue to pursue events that meet the needs of our diverse community.

Are there volunteer opportunities?

Yes. PFE needs an energetic team to help support this day. Inquire at pfe@nprnsb.org.

I didn’t receive a volunteer confirmation email. How do I know if my volunteer application was received?

Your request to volunteer has been received! Alyssa Pace, the Volunteer Coordinator, will be in touch be April 1 to confirm your role.

What should I bring?

Beyond a creative mindset, a suggested packing list includes a small backpack/bag, sunglasses/hat, sunscreen, and pen/pencil. Because PFE will be outdoors, please dress accordingly with walking shoes and layers that will keep you safe and comfortable in uneven terrain and exposure to fluctuating weather.

What should I wear? Are we outside all day?

Yes, this program is entirely outside. Please wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes, layers for warmth, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen as needed. While we hope for the standard beautiful weather for this time of year, please prepare for warm, cool, and/or windy conditions and other outside exposures.

Can I arrive late or leave early?

Due to the nature of the venue, rides will not be available to the ranch entrance/parking lot from the PFE program site between 9:00am – 5:30pm unless there is a personal emergency. Please plan to stay the day — and enjoy!

Can I make phone calls, check texts, or email at PFE 2019?

The short answer is no. There is no wifi and very limited cell reception along Alisal Road and at the Ranch property. We hope this will be a valued feature of the event, but acknowledge that this may raise some anxieties. In the case of emergency, there is cell reception back at Alisal’s main lodge — an approximate 10-minute escorted drive from our event location.

Can I work remotely at PFE?

Not this year! Please take the necessary steps prior to PFE to alert your team that you will be fully offline for the day. There is no wifi and very spotty cell service throughout the Alisal Ranch property. All attendees will appreciate your participation in PFE’s “Unplug” value of the day. Thank you!

What’s the difference between Ignite Presentations and Ignite Conversations?

PFE Ignite Presentations are brief, 4-5 minute presentations focused on one topic; no visuals or powerpoint — just a microphone! Selected from applications submitted online by March 15th, 12-15 presentations will be invited to present live at PFE 2019. Selected Ignite Presenters will also co-host their topic at one of the following Ignite Conversations to continue discussion with other attendees. Submit your Ignite Presentation here.

PFE Ignite Conversations are small group (2-15 persons) focused-topic discussions following the Ignite Presentations. Any registrant may propose an Ignite Conversation topic for small group discussion by March 18th. Topic applicants will also co-host their topic discussion with other attendees. Submit your Ignite Conversation here.

Who can give an Ignite Presentation or host an Ignite Conversation?

Any PFE registrant can present or host — board members, foundation or staff members, program managers, outreach coordinators, lead volunteers, founders and executive leaders are all encouraged to apply!

Can Ignite Presenters leave after presentations?

Due to the nature of the venue, rides will not be available to the ranch entrance/parking lot from the PFE program site between 9:00am – 5:30pm unless there is a personal emergency. Please plan to stay the day — and enjoy!

Is there live Spanish interpretation?

Due to logistical complexities at the outdoor venue, language interpretation services cannot be provided at this year’s event.

Is this event ADA accessible?

This private venue has dirt roads and paths which are subject to impacts of weather. Participants will move across uneven and unpredictable terrain throughout the day. The program will involve periods of standing, sitting, hayrides and walking/hiking around the ranch. If you have questions about the nature of this program, please contact conference organizers in advance at pfe@nprnsb.org. All reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate participants.

Can I edit my attendee profile?

You can edit your profile by logging into your NPRN account, viewing your individual profile, and clicking “Edit Profile” in the bottom right corner. Please note that you must be logged into the NPRN account that you registered with.

Since it's an outdoor program, what happens in the case of severe weather?

We may be subject to less than ideal/inclement weather at this outdoor venue. Please note, light rain/fog will not be cause for PFE cancellation. In the event of severe weather cancellation at Alisal Ranch, PFE will be hosted the following week, Thursday, April 18 with the same schedule and transportation.

In the case, your registration(s) will automatically transfer to the alternate weather date. Please understand, no refunds are available for weather conditions nor the alternate weather date. We encourage you to save both dates in April as you plan for PFE.

Can I pay with a check?

Yes. Please notify PFE by email at pfe@nprnsb.org and send your check to The Foundation Roundtable c/o Joni Meisel, P.O. Box 60157, Santa Barbara, CA 93160.

How do I cancel my registration? Is it refundable?

Your registration cancellation requests must be received in writing by mail or email no later than March 29, 2019. Requests received by the deadline will be confirmed by email and processed for full refund after  April 15, 2019. No credits are available. No refund approvals after March 29, 2019. If you cannot attend, you may transfer your registration by email to another participant before April 8, 2019.

To cancel your registration, send notice including name, organization, email, phone, original method of payment, and last 4-digits of credit card to pfe@nprnsb.org or PFE, The Foundation Roundtable, P.O. Box 60157, Santa Barbara, CA 93160.
