Position Summary

The Exhibits Manager plays a critical role in advancing MOXI’s mission and next phase of strategic growth and execution of the Exhibit Master Plan. This position is primarily responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of MOXI’s interactive exhibit experiences and temporary installations to ensure the optimum visitor experience. The Exhibits Manager also plays a key role, in collaboration with the education team and external stakeholders, in helping to shape a cohesive, immersive museum experience that integrates best practices in informal science learning. This is a hands-on management position that requires both high-level creative vision as well as nuts and bolts technical work; as such, the ideal candidate will have experience as a project manager in addition to technical skills, e.g., woodworking, engineering, or general fabrication.



  • Ensure the museum’s exhibits are fully operational and well-maintained by effectively and efficiently prioritizing maintenance needs and proactively identifying problems or anticipated repairs.
  • Facilitate museum opening and daily rounds. Includes serving as Manager on Duty at least one day/week.
  • Collaborate with senior management and Learning Experiences team to implement strategic goals and exhibit master plan.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment and follow proper safety procedures associated with each tool/equipment/material.
  • Manage the exhibits budget, including sourcing, purchasing, and ordering appropriate parts/tools/materials.
  • In collaboration with the education team, ensure the exhibits align with MOXI’s educational objectives, and recommend and/or implement improvements to existing exhibits to meet this goal.
  • Collaborate with education team to co-create exhibit installations and/or fabricate supplemental exhibit materials to support education programs and temporary installations.
  • Present plans for approval, intended purposes, budget requirements and fabrication restrictions.
  • Manage the communication, installation, and breakdown of temporary installations.
  • Serve as project manager with external consultants on successful and timely execution of the Exhibit Master Plan, providing both creative and tactical input to the development of new exhibits.
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness in the exhibit development field to follow trends and best practices, initiate relevant partnerships and serve new audiences.
  • Maintain close relationships with other museum/exhibitions professionals, consultants, and vendors
  • Other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Part-time exhibit technicians, part-time exhibits engineer


Required Skills and Abilities

  • Able to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, shop drawings, and design-intent sketches.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; must be receptive to the ideas of others and able to work cooperatively to prioritize tasks and accommodate many different and conflicting concerns.
  • Passion for creating a world-class museum that is recognized as a truly outstanding educational experience.
  • Enthusiasm for working in an organization where change is frequent, structure is evolving, and flexibility, teamwork, and good humor are absolute necessities.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn new systems and adapt with emerging technologies.
  • Awareness of issues relating to access and inclusion and the ability to build an inclusive and accessible visitor experience.
  • Spanish fluency a plus


Previous Experience Required

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ management experience in a museum or similar setting
  • General fabrication knowledge and experience with a workshop environment


Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, science, mathematics, engineering, arts, or related field


Essential Functions

  • This position requires:
    • Work five days/week on­site
    • Work at least one weekend day
    • Standing or walking for extended periods of time
    • The ability to bend, squat, lift push/pull up to 50 lbs.
    • Schedule and availability reflect that the organization is a 7-day a week operation, with periodic early morning and evening programs
    • Regular predictable attendance is required.
