DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SOLUTIONS FOR SANTA BARBARA COUNTY
BILINGUAL HOUSING FIRST ADVOCATE
Under the supervision of the Housing First Coordinator, the Housing First Advocate (HFA) assists survivors of domestic violence to locate, secure and maintain stable housing. The HFA performs financial assessments and provides assistance in multiple areas relating to finding adequate living accommodations. These include assessing needs and creating realistic and attainable goals related to securing housing, credit worthiness and employment allowing survivors to continue being successful after assistance is provided. The HFA accompanies clients to housing appointments/legal hearings through mobile and in-person advocacy; establishes and maintains community engagements with community partners/landlords/Housing Authority and works closing with both Santa Maria and Santa Barbara Shelter staff to assist clients placed in emergency shelter with food, housing, and other needs.

- Ongoing training with Housing Authority of Santa Barbara
AREA OF RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain client list up to date on a weekly basis, consisting of documenting notes within 1-3 days of service, and managing waitlist by prioritizing clients based on needs
- Return all client calls within a 48-hour period
- Submit all check requests once a week (date to be determined at a later time)
- Provide case management to all Housing First clients through weekly checks in, assessing needs, urgency and assisting in establishing realistic, attainable goals that will allow them to be successful after assistance is provided.
- Establish relationships with local property management/landlords, allowing clients to be housed in a seamless manner
- Provide additional support, connections to resources and services as needed to ensure clients have every opportunity to achieve their goals and objectives, specifically related to housing and financial needs.
- Together with the Housing First Coordinator, build and maintain partnerships with organizations that can provide supplemental services and resources to clients and assist in coordinating those partners’ activities
- Attend weekly staff meetings and monthly Housing First Meetings
- At times, may be asked to travel throughout the county to meet with clients
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in property management and housing
- Must have knowledge of Fair Housing laws (training available if needed)
- Must have a thorough understanding of the dynamics of family violence and trauma informed care
- Must be bi-lingual (English and Spanish), have own vehicle, and valid CA Driver’s License
On an as-needed basis, be on-call for client decisions and other client-related issues beyond scope of authority or experience of Housing First Advocate. Travel as necessary to all shelter locations in Santa Barbara County.
In the course of performing this job, the Housing First Advocate typically spends time sitting, walking, standing listening, speaking, writing and operating a personal computer. They will be required to drive an automobile or use public transportation to attend meetings within the community. They are expected to lift and carry office records and supplies up to 40 lbs on an occasional basis.
