Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC) Workshop: How to Make Community Events Accessible to Persons with Disabilities

On May 6th, 2019 the Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC) will be hosting a workshop on how to make community events accessible to persons with disabilities The workshop will be from 10:00am-12:00pm at the Dick DeWees Center in Lompoc.  This workshop will demonstrate ILRC‘s focus to advocate for the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of civic life in Santa Barbra County.

Over the years, ILRC has heard from many people with disabilities who want to attend community events but find it challenging to do so.   For instance, some of our consumers with low vision have complained  that their screen reading software can not recognize many of the flyers  that organizations send via e-mail or post on Facebook. We have also heard from people who use mobility devices who have tried going to an event only to find out it’s on the second story of a building that lacks an elevator. However, with training on needed preparation and resources, it is possible to have events where persons will not disabilities will not encounter these and other challenges.

When ILRC held this workshop in the past it received rave reviews from many government and civic entities including the Santa Barbara County Office of Elections and the Metropolitan Transit District
