Journey by Motion Theatre Dance Co This Sunday Only!
May 1 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm$20
Motion Theatre Dance Company announces “Journey” a dance production to be presented Sunday May 5, 2019 at 2 pm and 7 pm at Center Stage Theater, Paseo Nuevo Second Floor Arts Complex.
Company founder and award winning artist Maria Rendina Frantz will premiere “Trois Saintes de la Mer” a mystical dance choreographed to the complete “Moonlight Sonata” by Ludwig van Beethoven. Also premiering is “Journey” a dance about immigration to music by Italian composer Nino Rota. Rendina says, “It’s a humorous, motion theatre piece set in 1920’s highlighting the life of an Italian immigrant before the Great Depression, like my Nonna coming to the U.S. for a better life.”
Both contemporary ballet and modern dance will be on the program including the students at Santa Barbara Movement Arts. Rendina says “When I moved here I brought what I began in Santa Fe in 1995. Movement Arts encompasses dance, yoga and other movement methodology.”
Also on the program are some talented dancers and graduates from the UCSB dance program presenting three exciting, original contemporary works you won’t want to miss. Kelly O’Connor created a duet “openspaces” on the concepts of self-awareness, and the relationship between inner-space and outer-space to music by Nicolas Jar. “Locate” is a continuation of a contemporary ballet piece by Sammy Gerraty while studying the effects of human noise pollution on the lives of marine mammals, and seeks to spread awareness about its devastating impacts. “turn it on, turn it off,” choreographed and performed by Gianna Burright, who describes it as “we witness the performer remember, relive, and reclaim, things she never got the chance to say – but on her terms, the terms of her body.” Also joining the dance troupe is Tara McAninch and Bianca Salazar.
