ADL Webinar on The Social Dilemma and Stopping Hate for Profit
January 13 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pmFree
WEBINAR: ENDING THE SOCIAL DILEMMA BY STOPPING HATE FOR PROFIT
On Wednesday, January 13, at noon, ADL Santa Barbara/Tri-Counties Regional Director Dan Meisel will be moderating a free panel discussion with the Director of the acclaimed Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma, and one of ADL’s partners in the Stop Hate for Profit campaign to discuss the amplification of hate and other issues with social media platforms.
The Social Dilemma burst onto Sundance and Netflix screens in 2020, exposing how social media platforms exploit the psychological vulnerabilities of their users to drive revenue, and how those mechanisms are challenging our social fabric. At the same time, a coalition of non-profits formed the Stop Hate for Profit campaign to urge Facebook and other platforms to stop valuing profits over the hate, bigotry, racism, antisemitism, and disinformation being amplified on their platforms. The convergence of the film and the campaign with prior efforts to increase social media platform accountability are finally resulting in meaningful change at tech companies, but there is much more they and the public can do to address these problems.
Join us for a conversation with Jeff Orlowski, Director of The Social Dilemma, and Brenda Castillo, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition and Stop Hate for Profit Leader, to discuss holding social media companies accountable, finding solutions to “the Social Dilemma,” and ensuring that individuals are protected.
Registration required by January 12, 2021.
