6th Foodbank Partner Summit: Moving from Hunger to Health

Janet McIntyre, Vice President of Programs and Training, Executive Service Corps (Southern California), leads the Foodbank Partner Summit keynote address, “How Nonprofits Can Prepare for the Challenges of the Next Decade.”

At the Foodbank Partner Summit, nonprofit professionals are invited to collaborate, learn and network to take your agency a step further toward health & wellness in Santa Barbara County. Attend sessions on volunteerism, nutrition education, advocacy, grant-writing, senior nutrition, Santa Barbara County Food Action Plan, CalFresh, food safety, best practices, and more.

Single tickets to the Summit are $35, or save by inviting two attendees from your organization for $50. Admission includes continental breakfast, lunch, and social mixer in the afternoon.

Keynote Address
“How Nonprofits Can Prepare for the Challenges of the Next Decade”

Janet McIntyre has been with ESC since 2012, and brings with her extensive experience as a certified coach and nonprofit consultant. She leads the design and execution of ESC’s client training institutes, customized leadership cohort programs and collaborative projects. She earned her Executive Master of Leadership with an emphasis in nonprofit management from USC’s Price School of Public Policy. She has 20 years working across the southern California nonprofit sector, from the Hollywood Arts Council and Classical KUSC Radio, Occidental College and Jericho Road Pasadena.

Breakout Session I

  • Grant Writing Fundamentals: Writing Grants that Will Get Results
    ​Michael Kaplan, Transition Mental Health
     This workshop breaks down the grant writing process into two distinct, related pieces: how do you create a compelling story about your nonprofit, and who are you supposed to tell that story to? Topics will cover how to identify prospective funders based on foundation profiles and 990 tax returns and understand the elements off a clear grant narrative.
  • Food Safety: What’s New and What’s Essential
    Amy Smith, Panera Regional Manager
     Do you have questions about expired food or how long food should be left unrefrigerated? Learn about the dangers and risks that contribute to food-borne illness outbreaks. We all play an important role in keeping our food safe for our clients, so let’s do our part.
  • USDA: New Training & How-To’s – Take Advantage of This Major Source of Food
    Lori Coopwood, California Department of Social ServicesA training refresher on how to check in clients to receive USDA commodities and provide required reports. Also covered will be new mandatory civil rights training.
  • Food Action Plan: How Can You Get Involved and Get Funded?
    Emily Miller, Community Environmental Council

    Emily Miller, Food and Climate Program Associate at the Community Environmental Council, will give an update on how the Food Action Plan has moved from report to action. She’ll discuss grant opportunities for non-profits who want to address priority goals of the plan, and how organizations and individuals can become involved in ongoing workshops designed to help the County use food as a driver of both economic development and increased health.     Keeping Our Seniors Healthy: What Are the Services and Strategies That Work Learn how we can all help our seniors continue to thrive in health and strength. Partners can increase awareness of what our seniors need to obtain healthy food choices.
  • Is Food Enough? Exploring Educational Programs Linked to Food Distribution
    ​Lee Sherman, Foodbank Director of Community Impact
    Interested in serving your clients beyond general food distribution? Join us to learn about the Foodbank’s direct-to-client programs that pair nutrition education and food literacy lessons with delicious tastings and food demo. Foodbank Feed the Future programs feature curriculum tailored for pre-school to junior high learners and are easily adoptable for partner distribution organizations. Help your clients learn how to manage chronic conditions with food as medicine through our Diabetes Impact Group or become a force for change in your community by joining the Foodbank’s Nutrition Advocates program.
