Sponsored by CALM’s North County Community Relations Committee, Yumi Velazquez receives Staff Member of the Year honor.
Santa Maria, CA. June 2018- North County family service providers at CALM have elected licensed marriage and family therapist Yumi Velazquez as their 2018 staff member of the year.
Velazquez works at CALM’s Santa Maria office primarily with survivors of domestic violence and with children who have experienced abuse in the Child Abuse Treatment (CHAT) program. Using Evidence-based therapy, the CHAT program aims to heal children and families who have experienced trauma and prevent future traumas through safety planning and education.
Velazquez’ colleagues describe her as a selfless therapist who goes out of her way to provide her families with the care they need. They say she is a “constant support and creates a loving, non-judgmental space” allowing her families to heal and grow. Velazquez is known for being approachable, having a positive attitude, and weathering some of the most difficult cases at CALM in the past year. Domestic violence has had a major impact on our community. CALM is grateful for Velazquez’ dedication to Santa Maria families and her tireless efforts to stop the cycle of abuse.
Velazquez’ award was presented to her by CALM’s North County Community Relations Committee (NCCRC) at their recent event, Ladies Get Loud for CALM, an annual ladies night out fundraiser at the Santa Maria Country Club.
Inspired by the rigorous efforts of CALM’s Santa Maria staff to end childhood trauma, CALM’s NCCRC created this annual award in 2016 to honor employees who do emotionally demanding work.
“We want them to know that we appreciate and support their efforts to treat the effects of abuse, trauma and violence in our community” explains Mike Gibson, CALM board trustee and NCCRC member.
When asked to comment on the honor, Velazquez humbly credited her clients with doing the hardest work of all. “They teach me more than I could ever teach them, that despite the hardships they will continue to smile. Our kids at CALM are the most courageous little human beings I know.”
CALM was founded in 1970 to reach stressed parents before they hurt their children. CALM continues to be the only nonprofit agency in Santa Barbara County focusing solely on protecting the most important relationship in the world by preventing childhood trauma, healing children and families, and building resilient communities.
