Explore Ecology and the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Teen Arts Council have invited high school students from Santa Barbara County to submit their work to Beyond 2°: Millennial Impact. Passionate artists and environmental enthusiasts between the ages of 13 to 18 are encouraged to submit work for this teen-organized and implemented show.
The Museum of Contemporary Art’s (MCASB) Teen Arts Council is curating this student exhibition in connection with Beyond 2°, an MCASB exhibition that brings attention to the ecological and social effects of natural resource extraction and exploitation.
Local high school students from Santa Barbara County are encouraged to participate by creating artwork that speaks to contemporary environmental concerns. “The idea behind the exhibition is to allow teens to express their voice and opinions on environmental issues through art,” says Megan, a member of the Council.
Artwork is selected by the Teen Arts Council. Not all entries are guaranteed a space in the exhibition. Artwork must address the natural sciences, natural or recycled materials, or be otherwise inspired by the current state of our environment. There is a limit of 3 submissions per artist. All mediums are welcome, but artwork exceeding 28” X 36” may not be accepted. Completed applications must be submitted with each art piece.
The teens hope to “make their peers more aware of environmental issues and contemporary art and to grow the teen arts community.” Megan says, “Beyond 2°: Millennial Impact will give teen artists the chance to speak up and show that our generation is very passionate about the environment.”
“It’s an important issue and we are the generation that will have to fix it.” says Gigdem, another Council Member.
Submissions must be dropped off on March 11, 2016 between the hours of 11:00 am and 5:00 pm at Art from Scrap (302 East Cota Street Santa Barbara, CA 93101). The public is invited to stop in and see the art from March 19 – April 22, 2016 at Art from Scrap.
Beyond 2°: Millennial Impact opens with an Art Workshop on Saturday, March 19th, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Taught by members of the MCASB Teen Arts Council, the workshop will celebrate the opening of the show. Refreshments will be served. Cost of the workshop is $8.00 per person.
The public is also invited to the Beyond 2°: Millennial Impact Closing Reception and Party on Friday, April 22, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Art From Scrap. There will be food, festivities, and music. This event is free.
