Last week, while thousands of students across Santa Barbara County were enjoying the last days of summer, twelve young men participated in the inaugural College Scholars Academy.
The Scholarship Foundation, in collaboration with Santa Barbara Partners in Education, launched this exciting week-long pilot program aimed at building the college knowledge and self-confidence of young men of color.
The participants, all about to enter their sophomore year in high school, spent five days exploring topics ranging from college and career readiness to financial aid options to decision-making and leadership skills. They were also mentored by current college students who share a similar family experience and background. The incredible week was capped with tours of the UCSB and USC campuses.
The response to College Scholars Academy has been overwhelmingly positive and we hope to repeat the program next year.
